During LGBTQ+ Adoption and Fostering week, we interviewed foster carers Zahra and Annie to share their experiences as members of the LGBTQ+ community and foster carers in Flintshire.
what motivated you to become a foster carer and how did being a member of the lgbtq+ community influence your decision?
We have a 6-year-old daughter who is the most loving, generous, big-hearted little person. One day, she said, ‘Mummies, we have lots of love in our family, so could we help a kid who can't live with their family?’. At that point, we knew we were all ready to open our doors and hearts to offer any young person in need of love, security, shelter a place in our family.
As a family and within the wider community, our family is loved and supported just as we are, and we try to teach love and understanding.
what sort of support do you get from foster wales flintshire and the wider fostering community?
We have received lots of support throughout the process, from when we applied to become foster carers to when we were approved. Foster Wales Flintshire also introduced us to the Mockingbird Network, where we had the opportunity to learn about the various support they offer. It's a fantastic service, and we can't wait to be part of it.
how do you ensure that the children in your care feel comfortable and supported in a diverse family setting?
We treat others how we want to be treated. We are open and honest about who we are and who we love and will accept people regardless of their differences.
in what ways have you seen the foster care system evolve to become more inclusive and supportive of lgbtq+ families over the years?
Even though we have only just been approved as foster carers, we feel that we haven't been treated any differently. Regardless of all our differences as people, it's the skills we have that make us suitable for the role
what advice would you give to other lgbtq+ individuals or couples who are considering becoming foster carers with foster wales flintshire?
No matter who you are, your age, gender, ethnicity or who you love, if you have the capacity to offer security and stability, be patient and understanding, then definitely apply and change the lives of those most in need.
