the process

You’re all set to start your journey, but how long does the fostering process in Flintshire take, and what can you expect?

the first step

The first step to becoming a foster carer is to make an initial enquiry. As soon as you pick up the phone to us or send us an email, you’re on your way. This step may seem small, but it’s monumental.

We’ll take all your essential details so we can start to understand your situation. You’ll also receive an information pack to get a wider knowledge of what it’s like to be a foster carer.

the home visit

After contacting us, we’ll begin the process of getting to know you. We’ll start by having a chat, followed by a home visit either in person or a video call. In the beginning, it’s important that we form a relationship with you - to understand who means the most to you and find out where home is. Then there will be some initial paperwork to complete.

the training

We offer an online training course which starts to equip you with the skills and information you need. This course is friendly and informal, and gives you the chance to meet the Foster Wales Flintshire team, as well as other carers in the local area.

the assessment

During the assessment stage, you’ll learn what fostering will mean for you. Although an assessment, it’s not by any means a test. It’s simply an opportunity for us to explore your family dynamics and a chance for you and your family to ask any questions you may have. Assessments, carried out by skilled social workers, consider the strengths and vulnerabilities of your family unit.

It’s about preparing for the rewards and challenges that might come with fostering.

the panel

Every Foster Wales team has a panel, which is where your assessment is considered. The panel is made up of knowledgeable, experienced social care workers and independent members. They look at each potential foster carer as an individual.

It’s not a case of giving your journey a red or green light. Your application will be considered from all angles, and recommendations will be given on what might work best for you.

the foster care agreement

After your assessment has been approved, the foster care agreement sets out what it means to be a foster carer. From your daily responsibilities to the wider support and guidance you’ll offer.

The agreement also covers how we’ll support you – with our expertise and services.
